For Faculty/Staff: When to Refer a Student
Personal Student Support
Our primary support efforts focus on assisting students in successfully transitioning through a variety of challenging circumstances that can impact their lives, both inside and outside the classroom. These situations may include personal or family illness, loss, financial stress, academic access, living issues, and other forces that may interfere with their well-being, success, and/or academic retention. We help educate students on resources that are available to them both within the College of Engineering as well as Central Campus resources.
In addition to our direct services to students, OSSA partners in many ways with other campus and community agencies to provide access and support to relevant resources that may also help with a student’s personal and/or academic success. A sampling of those departments, agencies and resources can be found in our “On/Off Campus Resources” section.
Academic Retention and Support
In addition to direct student support, our office also provides administrative oversight of the College of Engineering’s Scholastic Standing process for undergraduate students. The Scholastic Standing Committee (SSC) consists of faculty and staff who monitor and uphold the College of Engineering’s academic standards and policies as defined in the CoE Bulletin. In addition to hearing appeals for reinstatement, the Committee also responds to petitions for late withdrawals and exceptions to college rules.
Scholastic Standing Committee members are happy to offer support and resource referrals for students in academic difficulty. A list of SSC Committee Members can be found here— feel free to contact them to make an appointment or ask for advice.
